Jerry Spinelli

Jerry Spinelli was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He wanted to be a famous athlete at first, but then he decided to become a writer. He went to Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. After college, he wrote in a department store magazine. During this time, Jerry Spinelli began to write his novels. His first four novels were rejected! Finally his fifth novel, "Space Station Seventh Grade" was published. It was actually meant for adults, but became a children's book instead. He is still writing today!! All of his books can be found in the school or local library.

I love reading Jerry Spinelli's books. His books are all different, but all fantastic. Some books are funny, some are serious, and some are just fun to read. Here are a few great books that Jerry Spinelli has written. Enjoy!!

  1. Space Station Seventh Grade

  2. Maniac Magee

  3. Fourth Grade Rats

  4. Report to the Principal's Office

  5. The Library Card

Realistic Fiction

Have you ever read realistic fiction? It is one of my favorite types of fiction to read. Do you want to know why? It could really happen. That's right, realistic fiction is a fictional story, but one that could really happen. When I read realistic fiction, I pretend that I am right there with the characters. Sometimes I even pretend its me in their shoes!

I just finished reading a very funny series called "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" by Jeff Kinney. Right now, there are five books out in the series. These books are about a middle school boy named Greg Heffley. He is always saying the wrong thing, causing trouble for others or getting into trouble himself. It is all about his many adventures, and what happens to him as he goes through middle school. I do not want to tell you too much though. In order to find out what happens, you will have to read them yourself! I know you will enjoy these books. Some of you might even have had the same mishaps as Greg!

After you read, check out the movies too! They are just as funny and have a great cast!

Historical Fiction

History is an important part of who we are. It is all around us. In school, we have been learning about the history of this country. We have also been learning about our own family histories and where we come from.

I know history can be boring to read about, but have you ever tried historical fiction? Historical fiction is a fantastic genre! It is a made up story, but it takes place during a real event from the past. For instance, you can read about a story that takes place during the Civil War. The story may be made up, but the Civil War really happened. It is a great way to learn about what happened in the past, but in a more exciting way!

If you are interested, here are some historical fiction books that I love to read:

Toliver is a girl in hiding. She has to travel through British occupied New Jersey to deliver a message for George Washington! Will she ever make it?

Buddy is an orphaned boy living through the Great Depression. He is tired of his foster home. He runs away in search of his real father, a famous bandleader.

Tim's brother is fighting for the Patriots. Tim's dad supports the British. Who's side should he take? Will his brother Sam come out of this war alive?

Welcome :-)

Welcome to Miss Hulse's Blog Spot!!

I absolutely love to read! When I'm not doing work, you can always catch me snuggled up with a good book!! Reading allows me to visit all different places and times. I love getting lost in a good story, and feeling like I am really there with the other characters! Have you ever felt that way about a story?

I love to read all different types, or genres, of books. I am always on the lookout for new and different books to read. Picture books, chapter books- you name it and I'm there!

Since I am always on the hunt for new books and authors, I knew this would be a great place to showcase what I find. Every week I will be posting a new author, or a book recommendation. Keep checking back to see if they catch your fancy! All of the authors and books I showcase here will be available in the classroom library, or the school library. They will always be right at your fingertips, ready to read :-)

That's all for now!
